Detailed laboratory research, especially of CO2 - rock interaction

Integrity of sealing rock formations of potential CO2 storage sites

Background

Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage (CCS) denotes the extraction of carbon dioxide (CO2) from point sources, e. g. flue gases of power stations, and its storage in deep geologic reservoirs. CCS is considered a potential option to reduce CO2 emissions from anthropogenic activities and their climatic impact. more

Methods

The CO2Seals project investigates the sealing efficiency and long-term integrity of geologic strata (caprocks, seals), overlying potential CO2 storage formations. The experimental program comprises petrophysical, mineralogical, geochemical and mechanical methods. Numerical models are used to reproduce the observed geochemical and fluid-transport processes on the experimental scale. Subsequently, these models are applied for upscaling to reservoir scale. more

Focus

The main objective is to establish reliable criteria for the appraisal of sealing efficiency, long-term integrity and leakage rates for low-permeable geological strata overlying potential CO2 reservoirs. One aspect of the CO2Seals project is to obtain a better understanding of the effects of CO2-water-rock and CO2-rock interactions on the sealing efficiency of caprocks. more

Framework

CO2Seals is one of 11 research projects addressing Technologies for safe and permanent storage of the greenhouse gas CO2, funded by the German Federal GEOTECHNOLOGIEN program, within the key research area: Investigation, Use and Protection of the Underground. CO2Seals is a 3-year project which started in August 2008."
Associated Projects: CO2-TRAP - Development and Evaluation of Innovative Strategies for Storage and Permanent Immobilization of CO2 in Geological Formations
ALCATRAP
- Optimisation of CO2 binding by reaction with alkaline residual materials through the ALCATRAP process
CO2-SINUS
- CO2 Storage in in situ Converted Coal Seams

Funding

The CO2Seals project is co-funded by the GEOTECHNOLOGIEN R&D program (50%) and the industry partner Shell International Exploration and Production (SIEP) (50%). SIEP also provides scientific and technical support.
